Our Departmental Profile

The Facilities Management and Development Department at SUNY Downstate Medical Center is comprised of a diverse group of multitalented individuals with backgrounds ranging in Architectural, Mechanical, Electrical Design, Project Management, Code Compliance, Environmental Health and Safety, and Building Services. Our highly diverse background is a major reason why our department is uniquely qualified to handle requests for services internally. Our main office is located in the Basic Science Building room1-15.

Our Responsibility

Facilities Management & Development is responsible for the overall maintenance and operation of all SUNY Downstate Medical Center buildings and grounds which totals in excess of 2,500,000 gross square feet. The department is subdivided into four primary divisions:Physical Plant, Design and Construction, Environmental Health & Safety.

We take tremendous pride in continuously maintaining the highest standards possible in providing a safe, comfortable, and clean environment for all staff, students, patients, and faculty at the SUNY Downstate Medical Center.

Campus Construction Activity Updates:
8-21-17

  • 14496-00 BSB Air Handler Upgrade/DLAR Project
    • This project requires concrete placement in the BSB Penthouse. The Contractor plans to place heavy equipment and concrete trucks along New York Avenue during the entire day, Saturday, August 26th, 2017. Pedestrians along New York Avenue, closer to Clarkson will be asked to use the sidewalk on the opposing side of the street.
  • 14B17 Boiler Replacement Project
    • Heavy construction activity is anticipated as the Contractor will continue to excavate along the Hospital's receiving ramp this week. The Contractor also anticipates covering up the Fuel Oil tanks in front of the HSEB requiring the use of heavy machinery.
  • 14A18 UHB Air Handler Upgrade Project
    • During the entire day -Saturday August 26th, The Contractor will be off-loading and moving equipment on the Central Receiving Loading dock. Please anticipate heavy traffic throughout the day in the Receiving Courtyard. Contractors will also be utilizing the ceiling hatch door located near elevators 4, 5, 6 & 7 on the 8th floor (UHB).
  • 14496-02 BSB Sprinkler Upgrade Project
    • Contractor currently working both early morning and after hours inside the BSB. Personnel will continue working on each of the floors of the BSB installing fire hose cabinets. Building Staff and occupants will see notifications posted in the affected office areas.
  • 14490 BSB Electrical Switchgear Project
    • Workers will be visible in and around the BSB Basement areas completing conduit work during the evening hours.

Goals

  • Develop methods for campus communications on facilities projects and deferred maintenance problems and issues.
  • Enhance tools to track, measure and report on facilities management for this Campus.
  • Improve the project delivery system within Design and Construction Unit and associated support services.
  • Enhance the safety of the Plant Utility area, staff properly per regulations, reducing staff burnout.
  • Define proper facilities staffing for an institution of this size complexity and niche service ( peer institutions and assoc.)
  • Ensure staff are properly trained, have tools, equipment and operating systems to perform work efficiently and effectively to meet the mission and goals of the Campus.
