Dr. Kaplan specializes in occupational therapy intervention with children and families. She has been the director of two U.S. Department of Education grants to provide advanced training in early intervention to Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy students. Publications include journal articles and textbook chapters on multisensory environments, intervention for children with HIV/AIDS, motor skills acquisition and use of activities for intervention with children. Dr. Kaplan has recently served as the Interim Dean for the College of Health Related Professions. She now holds another administrative position in the university and she teaches the inter-disciplinary Research Methods course. She was recognized by the American Occupational Therapy Association with a Recognition of Achievement award for promoting family centered practice for underserved children and by the Zero to Three association for leadership in New York's zero to three field.
