Midwifery Education Program

On-line Courses

The following courses can be found at the Educational Computing & Technology site.

Distance Learning Courses: (Students are required to attend one on campus day at the beginning of each online course.)

All of the remaining midwifery courses are web enhanced.


Recommended minimum computing platform for accessing course materials on PRIME utilizing a laptop:

Processor: Minimum- CPU speed of 1.7 Ghz or faster; Recommended - 2.0 GHz or faster

Hard Drive: At least 250 Gb hard drive capacity; at least 80 Gb free drive space after installation of operating system(s), programs and files

System Memory (RAM): Minimum - At least 4 Gb; Recommended - 4 Gb or more

Operating System:

Windows operating system-based laptops:

  • Windows Vista (Ultimate, Enterprise, Business, or Home Editions), 32-bit or 64-bit versions, Service Pack 2 or later.
  • Windows 7 (Home Premium, Professional or Ultimate Edition), 32-bit or 64-bit version.
  • Windows 8 "full" OS editions (Consumer, Pro and Enterprise editions)
    • PLEASE NOTE: Win 8 OS comes in two main types:
      - A “full” OS (Win 8 “consumer”, Pro and Enterprise editions) that runs on Intel/AMD processors and that can run standard PC software. These can be on desktops, laptops and even some tablets.
      - A “restricted” OS (RT edition) that runs on ARM processors and that will NOT run standard PC software. Instead, it requires the purchase and installation of “apps” from the Microsoft Store.
      - We do NOT recommend purchase of Win 8 RT tablets using ARM processors at the present time for the following reasons:
      These may not be able to connect to campus WiFi even after implementation of an upgrade enables connection of other "full" Win 8 editions.
      These may not be able to run software required as part of the future curriculum.

 

Mac OS X operating system-based laptops:

  • Mac OS X 10.6 or greater.

Video

Video system capable of displaying 24-bit color;
1024 × 768 pixels resolution or better;
60 Hz or faster refresh rate

Video card/processor with 256 Mb or more of its own video ram (VRAM)

Internet Connection: “Broadband” connections such as cable, DSL, fiber optic or satellite will prove satisfactory.

Network

NOTE: both wired (Ethernet) and wireless (Wi-Fi) networking capability are required

Security: Users are strongly urged to purchase/maintain licensed antiviral & internet security software from major vendors such as McAfee, Symantec (Available free to on-campus users) or Trend Micro.  Users running Microsoft Windows should choose the “automatic” option for Windows Update, which keeps user machines secure by periodically updating key operating system files as they are released by Microsoft..  

Web Browsers: Internet Explorer (8.0 or greater), Firefox or Google Chrome — Note: some browsers such as Apple Safari or Google Chrome may not function properly with all systems in use at Downstate.

Battery Life of Lap Tops used during class: 4–5 hour battery or 3 hour battery life with spare battery
Not all lap tops may allow users to remove and replace batteries. Please check.
