Academic Responsibilities:
Course co-coordination of Medical & Obstetric Complications, Obstetric Complications of Pregnancy, Intrapartum Care and Professional Issues & Leadership in Midwifery.
Experience:
Karen Trister Grace came to midwifery by way of undergraduate studies in sociology and women's health. After embarking on a career in the field of social science research she returned to school to pursue her dream of becoming a midwife. Since that time she has worked as a midwife in public hospitals in Brooklyn and the Bronx, serving a diverse, vulnerable population of women in her full scope practice. She has precepted numerous midwifery, nurse practitioner and medical students in clinical practice. Before coming to SUNY Downstate Karen enjoyed guest lecturing to graduate students around the city, and held adjunct faculty positions at Columbia University School of Nursing and NYU College of Nursing.
Contributions to the Profession:
Karen has served as Treasurer and Secretary of the New York City Chapter of the ACNM, and is a member of the Chapter's media emergency response team. She is an active member of the ACNM's Clinical Practice Section, and has served as a peer reviewer for the Journal of Midwifery & Women's Health. She was also an original founder of Miles for Midwives, an annual midwifery week event which has grown to be New York's largest celebration of midwifery and women's health.
