The Donald Scherl Award

Grace Holmes, CNM, LM, MS earns the Dr. Donald Scherl Award

Each year, the College of Health Related Profession acknowledges a faculty member who has demonstrated faculty excellence. The President Donald Scherl Award is presented to a member of the faculty who has demonstrated:

  • Innovations in Teaching
  • Professional and Community Services
  • Contributions to the College and Center
  • Student Support and Service beyond student advisement

In 2005 the President Donald Scherl Award Recipient was Grace Holmes, CNM, LM, MS. Professor Holmes has consistently demonstrated her commitment to higher education since becoming a faculty member in 1990. She is a quiet force within the College, a dedicated classroom instructor, clinical educator, practicing clinician and student advocate.

Professor Holmes consistently strives to create effective and memorable educational experiences for students. She serves the Brooklyn community, providing health education and screening interventions for a number of local community-based organizations, health facilities and public schools and is actively involved in her professional organization.

Throughout her tenure, she has served on a number of committees, most recently chairing the Clinical Coordinators Committee. This dedicated faculty member epitomizes the role of faculty through her consistent support of students.


Lily Hsia, CNM, PNP, MS, FACNM, Chairperson of the SUNY Downstate Midwifery Education program received the prestigious Donald Scherl award from Dr. JoAnn Bradley. Professor Hsia is the first recipient of this award recognizing over 30 years of dedicated service and leadership to midwifery education.
