SUNY Downstate Medical Center

Medical Informatics Program

Internship and Community-based Projects

photo

The final year of the program includes a requirement to do 120 clock hours of internship (taken as two 1.5 credit courses, either together in one semester or over two semesters).

This provides the student the ability to consolidate theoretical study with hands-on experience in a professional setting, such as hospitals, practices, the NYC public health department, and other sites. Site availability fluctuates. Currently, we have arrangements to place students at Downstate and King's County hospitals, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and other Brooklyn and Manhattan hospitals, and an electronic health records vendor. Students may also arrange to set up their own unique internships.
